About the Miami-Dade Police Department Training Bureau
The functions of the Miami Dade Police Department Metropolitan Police Institute (MPI) Training Bureau are divided into five unique sections. Each section is comprised of units which have different responsibilities. A section is supervised by a Lieutenant and a unit is supervised by a Sergeant.
Units within our sections control, guide and facilitate "training tracks" that focus on skills specific to our Department's organizational structure. Each track is flexible enough to meet the changing needs our community presents and current examples include: Uniform Patrol Training Track, Career Enhancement Training Track, Civilian Training Track, Computer Training Track, Tactical & Specialized Training Track, Field Training Track and Basic Training Track.
The Basic Training component has the responsibility for training all the Miami-Dade Police Department's police recruits. All basic training is conducted at the Training Bureau. Included in this section are both the Basic Training Track and Field Training Track. Persons interested in learning how to become a Police Officer should email Personal Management Bureau or call them at 305-471-1945.
The In-Service component consists of the Firearms Unit and Police Survival Unit. Both the Firearms and Police Survival Units present state-of-the-art firearms and defensive tactics training. In additional to a diverse course selection, they also provide annual refresher training to over 3,000 sworn law enforcement officers.
This section includes the Metropolitan Police Institute's cutting edge Video Services Unit which is responsible for video production, audio support and the "Behind The Silver Badge" television show.
The Critical Incidents Management Unit responds to the growing threat of terrorism within Miami-Dade County. They are responsible for all emergency response related training including the Incident Command System.
The Entrepreneurial Unit provides training to law enforcement agencies and is recognized around the world as a leader. They provide instruction in a wide range of topics and their course catalog is available by clicking the Law Enforcement Training link.
The Administrative Services Section provides all administrative functions the other sections at the Training Bureau require and is also the liaison for physical plant maintenance and personnel. Payroll functions, training databases / employee history, course file maintenence, and site security are a few of their vast responsibilities.
The Professional Development Section provides training for supervisory and mid-management personnel. It also includes the Career Development Unit which coordinates all in-service training for Department personnel.
Coordinators within this section are responsible for the Uniform Patrol Training Track, Career Enhancement Track, Civilian Training Track and Computer Training Track.
The Traffic Skills Unit, departmental Fitness Center and Tactical / First Responder Unit make up this section which focuses it's efforts on traffic related courses, our officers' internal health and welfare, and first responder related training respectively.
